Stretch Marks

Stretch marks, also called striae, are off-color toned scars of the skin. Stretch marks are the outcome of the tearing of the dermis, the middle layer of the skin. The scars may be reduced over time but never totally disappear.

Stretch marks may appear on different parts of the body for various reasons. They are often caused by a rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or weight gain, or in some cases, the inexorable pull on the skin that overcomes the flexibility of the dermis. During this point, microscopic bleeding occurs with an inflammation of the tissues that give the appearance of stripes of reddish-purple newly formed raised stretch marks.

Because the dermis is stretched, the epidermis (outer layer of the skin) also stretches making it translucent enough that you can see the reddish structure. As these heal, scars, or stretch marks, will form. As time goes by, these marks fade to a color a few shades lighter than your natural skin tone. The lighter color is due to the expansion phase of the dermis, causing collagen production to be disturbed which in turn damages the skin pigment producing cells.

Stretch marks can also be manipulated by hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, puberty, and muscle strengthening. Pregnant women get stretch marks usually during the later stages of pregnancy when the baby is growing at a rapid pace. More than 75% of pregnant women are getting stretch marks on their abdominal areas. Other frequent places where stretch marks appear are the breasts, thighs and buttocks.

To significantly eliminate stretch marks, there are treatments in the doctor's office that can make the obvious marks less visible, such as Pulsed Dye Laser and the Fractional Laser. These treatments can enhance the appearance of stretch marks, varicose veins, Rosacea and certain types of birthmarks. These treatments can be extremely expensive and painful, however.
